  • Soak the seeds: Fill a bowl with warm water, and add the seeds. Allow the seeds to soak in the water for 24 to 48 hours to soften the hard seed coat.
  • Stratify the seeds: After soaking, place the seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of moist peat moss or vermiculite. Seal the bag and place it in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. This process is called stratification and mimics the natural winter dormancy that Southern magnolia seeds go through in the wild.
  • Plant the seeds: After stratification, remove the seeds from the refrigerator and sow them in a container or directly in the ground. If planting in a container, use a well-draining potting mix and plant the seeds 1 inch deep. If planting directly in the ground, sow the seeds 1 to 2 inches deep.
  • Water the seeds: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water the seeds regularly, especially during dry periods.
  • Transplant the seedlings: Once the seedlings have grown large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into their permanent location. Southern magnolia prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and partial shade to full sun.
